Lost in Space: The Fall of NASA and the Dream of a New Space Age
The daring, revolutionary NASA that sent Neil Armstrong to the moon has lost its meteoric vision, says journalist and space enthusiast Greg Klerkx. NASA, he contends, has devolved from a pioneer of space exploration into a factionalized bureaucracy focused primarily on its own survival. And as a result, humans haven't ventured beyond Earth orbit for three decades. Klerkx argues that after its wildly successful Apollo program, NASA clung fiercely to the spotlight by creating a government-sheltered monopoly with a few Big Aerospace companies. Although committed in theory to supporting commercial spaceflight, in practice it smothered vital private-sector innovation. In striking descriptions of space milestones spanning the golden 1960s Space Age and the 2003 "Columbia tragedy, Klerkx exposes the "real" NASA and envisions exciting public-private cooperation that could send humans back to the moon and beyond.

NASA and the Space Industry by Joan Lisa Bromberg,
NASA and the Space Industry by Joan Lisa Bromberg,
Few federal agencies have more extensive ties to the private sector than NASA. NASA's relationships with its many aerospace industry suppliers of rocket engines, computers, electronics, gauges, valves, O-rings, and other materials have often been described as "partnerships." These have produced a few memorable catastrophes, but mostly technical achievements of the highest order. Until now, no one has written extensively about them. In "NASA and the Space Industry," Joan Lisa Bromberg explores how NASA's relationship with the private sector developed and how it works. She outlines the various kinds of expertise public and private sectors brought to the tasks NASA took on, describing how this division of labor changed over time. She explains why NASA sometimes encouraged and sometimes thwarted the privatization of space projects and describes the agency's role in the rise of such new space industries as launch vehicles and communications satellites.

NASA Space Flight Medal - The NASA Space Flight Medal is a decoration of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration which is awarded to any astronaut who performs a significant achievement or meritorious deed while engaged in a United States space mission.

NASA Space Shuttle Decision - By 1970, the Apollo program has accomplished two lunar landings, and the nation had won the national prestige that Apollo was meant to achieve. There was no life-and-death reason to persist in this program at truly enormous cost.

NASA logo - The NASA "meatball" logo is the official NASA logo, created in 1959 when the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) metamorphosed into an agency that would advance both space and aeronautics: the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The sphere represents a planet, the stars represent space, the red chevron is a wing representing aeronautics (the latest design in hypersonic wings at the time the logo was developed), and then there is an orbiting spacecraft going around the wing.

Space Shuttle Enterprise - The Space Shuttle Enterprise (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-101) was the first Space Shuttle built for NASA. She was constructed without engines or a functional heat shield and was therefore not capable of space operations; her purpose was to perform test flights in the atmosphere.

Space Technology - Space Technology Space Warfare Since the 1940s, there have been discussions concerning the need to develop a space power theory. In their attempts to formulate such a strategic theory, strategists have noted the similarities of space operations to those of air space technology and naval operations. Consequently, many have attempted to derive a clearly articulated, all-encompassing space strategy through analogy space technology and comparison to either airpower or sea control models. These efforts, however, have not produced a strategic theory ...
